What Do Lutherans Believe and Teach?
How do we know about God?:
The Bible
IS
the inspired word of God, it does not just
CONTAIN
the Word of God. We can only express the teachings of Scripture, not change
them, add to them, or leave some of things out.
Why do we need a church?
God could use a megaphone, or beam ideas into our head like radio waves, but
he has chosen to work through people. He established the church and gave
special gifts to people to speak for him. It is through the church - as
imperfect as it may be - that God has chosen to tell you of his Love and
concern.
What is all this stuff about sin?
Because Adam and Eve sinned when they disobeyed God, they were forced to leave
the Garden of Eden and could not longer eat the fruit of the Tree of Life.
Without the Tree of Life, Adam and Eve died. We are all cut off from the Tree
of Life, but more importantly, we are all born in the likeness of Adam and
Eve: we all are disobedient. Because of our disobedience, we are guilt of
violating God's laws. As with physical laws, there are consequences for
violating them, and the consequences of sin is death, both physical and
spiritual.
What happens after death?
Disobedience does not just bring an end to existence. All people will be
raised from the dead to be judged. Those who are in a right relationship to
God when they die will experience a new live in paradise. Those who are not in
a right relationship will experience what it means to be separated from all
the is good.
How does Jesus fit into all of this?
Jesus came to restore a "right relationship with God." He took our
place before God, lived righteously, but took our guilt. He experienced the
full wrath of God - but because of His righteousness He was able to overcome
death.
Through Baptism, the Holy Spirit of God gives us the benefits of Jesus'
death and resurrection. He puts us in a right relationship with God and
empowers us to live God pleasing lives. We celebrate that life, and draw
strength from God through participation in Holy Communion.
